Signs & symbols

Signs + ,−,×,÷are used in Algebra in the same sense as in Arithmetic.

    1. Thus , in Arithmetic 4+3 means that 4 is to be added to 3, So in Algebra , a+b means that b is to be added to a.

  2. Again ,just as in Arithmetic ,8−3 means that 3 is to be subtracted from 8,so in ALGEBRA  a−b means that b is to be subtracted from a.

  3. In arithmetic ,just as 5×4 means that 5 is to be multiplied by 4, so also in Algebra a×b means that a is to be multiplied by b.

   4. Again ,just as in Arithmetic 12÷4 means that 12 is to be divided by 4,siilarly in Algebra a÷b means that a is to be divided by b.

a÷b is also written as a/b   or a/b

The product 2×a is written as 2a.Here we notice that the sign ×is omitted.

The symbols of abbreviation are frequently used in Algebra.

                = for " is equal to "

≡ for "is exactly the same as"

                > for " is greater than"

                < for " is less than′′

∴ for " then or therefore"

∵ for " since or because"

                ±  for " plus or minus "

               ≠for " is not equal to ".
